OAKLAND, Calif. -- James Paxton pounded the strike zone to induce groundballs, and his defence dazzled behind him. Paxton carried a shutout into the eighth inning and the Seattle Mariners held off a late rally by Oakland for a 6-5 win Tuesday night, handing the Athletics their fifth loss in six games. "This young mans got greatness written all over him, hes just got to stay healthy," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I thought it was a dominant performance." Paxton (5-1) gave up three hits through the seventh. Ahead 6-0, he was chased in Oaklands three-run eighth, and the As nearly got even in a harried ninth. Seattle closer Fernando Rodney took over with a 6-3 lead and retired the first two batters. He then gave up consecutive doubles to Derek Norris and pinch-hitters Brandon Moss and Sam Fuld before retiring Josh Reddick on a grounder for his 40th save. The As remained 4 1/2 games back of the first-place Angels, who lost at Houston. Seattle is third in the AL wild-card standings. Oakland didnt seem too concerned afterward. "No matter what inning you score in, it was a one-run game. Were one swing of the bat away from winning it," Norris said. "They didnt score for seven innings either. Thats why you play all nine innings." The rubber game Wednesday afternoon between the division rivals and playoff contenders has the makings of quite a pitchers duel. In a matchup of 13-game winners, Seattle ace Felix Hernandez faces Jon Lester. Paxton allowed two runs and four hits in 7 2-3 innings. He improved to 8-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 12 career starts. "I was just going at them with my fastball. They werent making the adjustment and they were hitting groundballs and hitting it right at guys, so I just kept on pounding away," Paxton said. "They got themselves out." Sonny Gray (13-8) gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings. He is 1-5 in seven outings since his 5-0 July earned him the AL Pitcher of the Month award. Gray came in 4-0 with a 1.10 ERA in his first five starts against the Mariners. "I thought he pitched better than the numbers would suggest," manager Bob Melvin said. Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer that helped the Mariners build a 6-0 lead. A day after hitting a home run in his first at-bat since joining the As, Adam Dunn had an RBI single as a pinch-hitter in the eighth to put Oakland on the board. Craig Gentry added a two-run double for his third hit. Endy Chavez hit a two-run double in the fourth that slowly chopped through the middle of the infield. With second baseman Alberto Callaspo in shallow centre trying to make a play, shortstop Jed Lowrie was late moving toward the bag and Chavez had already begun sliding into second and no throw was made. Austin Jackson hit a two-run single in the third. Seager homered in the fifth, Grays final inning. "Hes definitely one of those guys you have your hands full with," Seager said. TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: Chris Young (12-7), chased Monday after getting just two outs in the shortest outing of his career, will be evaluated during throwing sessions by manager Lloyd McClendon between starts to determine whether theres anything wrong physically with the 35-year-old right-hander. His 151 innings are his most since 173 in 2007 with San Diego. "We actually talked yesterday. He assured me that he felt healthy, and I assured him that I would do what I thought was best for this club," McClendon said. "Im going to evaluate it in the next day or two and well make a decision. If I deem him 100 per cent healthy, yes, hell start. Thats bullpen sessions, long toss, the whole nine yards." Athletics: CF Coco Crisp received trigger-point injections to help relieve tightness and pain in his stiff neck. ... C John Jaso (concussion) hit batting practice on the field and RHP closer Sean Doolittle (strained right intercostal) played catch. UP NEXT Mariners: Hernandez (13-5, 2.23) looks to end a three-start winless stretch in which hes 0-2 and bounce back from a loss to the Nationals after surrendering a career-high four home runs. Athletics: Lester (13-9, 2.55) hasnt faced the Mariners this year after being acquired by the As at the trade deadline. He took an 11-4 loss at Seattle on July 8, 2013, with Boston. دیدن لینک ها برای شما امکان پذیر نیست. لطفا ثبت نام کنید یا وارد حساب خود شوید تا بتوانید لینک ها را ببینید.

Wozniak wasted a match point in her 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-2 first-round loss to Romanias Sorana Cirstea. Torontos Fichman, ranked 77th, lost to sixth-seed Jelena Jankovic 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in a match interrupted by darkness last in the second set on Monday. The first meeting between qualifier Wozniak, the world No. 149 from Blainville, Que., and 26th-ranked Cirstea lasted for just over 90 minutes in dry but chilly conditions. Wozniak, who has struggled with rehabilitation from a 2012 shoulder injury, had her chances to close out a win as she led the second set 5-4 But she dumped a backhand into the net on her winning chance, allowing Cirstea to eventually hold serve and tie the set at five games apiece. "It was one point to win the match, Im disappointed that I didnt cover it," Wozniak said. Cirstea then broke Wozniak for a 6-5 lead and tied the match at a set apiece a game later. The third set was a disaster for Wozniak, who lost serve to start and was beaten with a forehand down the line. Wozniak said she was carrying a thigh injury from her second qualifying match and felt it during her loss. "The first two sets were real battles," Wozniak said, before giving credit to Cirstea. "She played well, shes a good pplayer with a solid ground game, I knew what I was facing when I went into the match.ddddddddddddIm disappointed it didnt go my way today. "Still, it was god experience to win three qualifying rounds. They helped me put in the work I needed. Its been two years since Ive played on real (European red) clay." Wozniak finished with 42 unforced errors and lost serve seven times while breaking Cirstea on four of eight chances. The Romanian won despite 51 unforced errors. Wozniak had her best Grand Slam result at Roland Garros in 2009 when she reached the fourth round. Fichman won her opening set on Monday against former No. 1 Jankovic but trailed 1-5 when darkness fell. When they came back, it was Jankovic in command, with the Serb winning the second set and breaking in the second game of the third. Fichman played catch-up all through the final set and saved a match point before taking the loss with 30 winners and 41 unforced errors. "At 3-all in the last set, I felt I got back into it, I played some good games," said Fichman. "Shes a tough player and is where she is for a reason. "She didnt give any free points; I knew I had to try and earn the match myself. I had a break point at 4-3 but I couldnt convert it. But the fact that I put myself into this position and had the chances is a positive thing. I hope to keep improving and take the good things from this match." ' ' '
