DENVER -- Veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba typically helps to get his pitchers through tough innings with timely talks on the mound or some smart pitch selection. He took a different route this time, calling on his legs, glove and instincts. Torrealba completed a remarkable double play by tagging out two runners, Jorge De La Rose pitched seven solid innings and the Colorado Rockies hung on to beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 Wednesday. "I owe him a dinner, I think," De La Rosa said of Torrealba and his defensive gem. "It was a huge play. We won the game on that play." Corey Dickerson doubled twice, tripled and drove in two runs. Troy Tulowitzki had two hits and a pair of RBIs as Colorado completed a 5-1 homestand on the heels of a 1-9 road trip. De La Rosa (12-6) allowed two runs on eight hits in running his record in eight day-game starts this season to 6-0 with a 1.57 ERA. He struck out six and walked one. Rex Brothers pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Andrew Cashner (8-7) gave up three runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked none. De La Rosa was labouring to hold a one-run lead in the sixth after giving up a leadoff single to Jedd Gyorko, throwing a wild pitch and surrendering a single to Jesus Guzman, putting runners at first and third with none out. Logan Forsythe hit a grounder to third and Gyorko broke for home. Third baseman Nolan Arenado threw the ball home to Torrealba, who chased Gyorko back toward third. As the two neared the bag, Torrealba managed to tag Gyorko on his back. Torrealba then spotted Guzman barrelling for third, made a dive in front of the sliding runner and tagged him out an instant before he reached the base. "I guess it was the play of the game but it was just reaction," said Torrealba, who made the spot start in place of regular catcher Wilin Rosario (hamstring). "I really dont even know how I did it, to be honest with you." Gyorko knows all too well how it happened. "I got in a rundown and Torrealba made a pretty good play to get both of us," Gyorko said. "He ran that to perfection. I tried to stay in the rundown a little longer to give guys a chance to move up. Thats the right play, it just didnt work out." Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Torrealbas heady play exemplifies the way he plays the game. "He gets pitchers through tough innings," Weiss said. "He brings a lot of positive energy every day. Hes one of those guys who doesnt have to light up the box score to help his team win." De La Rosa completed the escape from the inning by getting Ronny Cedeno to ground out. Colorado added an insurance run in the eighth on Dickersons RBI double. The Rockies went up 3-1 with a pair of runs in the third. Dexter Fowler led the inning off with a single and one later, Dickerson tripled off the wall in the centre. Tulowitzki followed with a single for his second RBI of the game. San Diego closed to within a run in the fourth when Gyorko doubled with two outs and Guzman followed with an RBI single. Colorado went in front 1-0 in the first on consecutive two-out doubles by Dickerson and Tulowitzki. Forsythe had a bead on Tulowitzkis deep drive to left field but the ball was knocked loose from his glove when he crashed against the wall. The Padres evened the score on Chris Denorfias RBI single in the third. NOTES: San Diegos Will Venable beat out an infield single in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, a career high. ... .com) - Jeff Teague finished with a game-high 26 points and eight assists as the Atlanta Hawks held off the Utah Jazz, 98-92, on Friday. LONDON -- Arsenal prepared for the Premier League season by collecting the Community Shield with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, picking up where the team left off at the FA Cup final by adding another piece of silverware at Wembley. Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, who both scored in the FA Cup triumph that ended Arsenals nine-year trophy drought in May, also netted against City with well-taken first-half strikes. A makeshift City was a shadow of the team that won the Premier League for the second time in three years in May. And Olivier Giroud added to Citys discomfort by scoring with a dipping strike on the hour in the traditional curtain-raiser to the English season between the Premier League and FA Cup champions. "This gives us a positive platform to prepare," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "Last year we were very consistent against the teams outside the top six and not consistent against the top six teams." Arsenal, which finished fourth after leading for much of last season, opens against Crystal Palace on Saturday as it looks to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004. Winning the Shield might set the tone for the opening weeks of the season, but is likely to be forgotten quickly. For David Moyes, it counted for nothing that his brief and unsuccessful Manchester United reign began by lifting the trophy here a year ago. Given how Citys makeshift team performed in the first half, with just four of the players who started the title-clinching Premier League finale in May, it might be an uncomfortable start to the title defence at Newcastle on Sunday. Perhaps most surprisingly, England goalkeeper Joe Hart was on the bench as new signing Willy Caballero was preferred in goal. But Hart, who was dropped during last season and successfully fought to regain his City place, saw the reccruit from Malaga concede three times.dddddddddddd At the first match at Wembley since Englands pre-World Cup friendly against Peru in May, the shortage of Englishmen at top clubs was exposed again. With Hart dropped, Citys starting lineup lacked a single Englishman. "I dont see what nationalities the players are," Pellegrini said. "I use the players who I think are the best players to win that game. It doesnt matter if they are England players." Arsenal had a core of three, including new signing Calum Chambers who was assured in central defence. Arsenals trio of German World Cup winners -- Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski -- are still on their post-Brazil break. But the cup winners, with $60 million-forward Alexis Sanchez making a lively full debut, were in control throughout against a City side that provided little threat. Just like in the FA Cup final win against Hull, Cazorla scored Arsenals first goal. Jack Wilshere and Yaya Sanogo combined before the ball broke for Cazorla to strike low into the net in the 21st minute. Sanogo dragged a shot wide and had a header collected by Caballero before helping ensure that Arsenals cushion was doubled before half time. Completing a swift break, the French forward held off Dedryck Boyata before passing for Ramsey to neatly stab the ball in the 42nd. "We passed the ball around very quickly and looked a threat every time," said Mikel Arteta, who has assumed the captaincy from Thomas Vermaelen after the defender joined Barcelona. "Weve got pace up front now and it makes a big difference." Although City appeared more effective at the start of the second half, with Stevan Jovetic denied by Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, the deficit was extended on the hour when Giroud was given the space to send a dipping strike past Caballero.
